The new book from Gestalten, Visions of Architecture.

Ricardo Bofill is one of the 20th century’s most unique architects and radical visionaries. His visions for urban and communal life challenged preconceived notions of shared space and proposed alternative styles of living. This monograph explores his revolutionary approach by profiling his greatest projects like La Fábrica, Walden 7, La Muralla Roja or Abraxas. Spectacular new photography by Salva López, texts by experts like Nacho Alegre and Douglas Murphy as well as by Bofill himself are complemented with sketches and floor plans. Bofill’s fantastic creations satisfy a longing for originality, personality and progressive ideals.

Architecture renegade Ricardo Bofill invites us into the 5,000-square ft former cement factory outside Barcelona that he calls home.

Geometric shapes, striking colours and green surrounds make this apartment complex in Spain an architectural dream – drawing inspiration from traditional Arab- Mediterranean architecture.

Ricardo Bofill’s La Muralla Roja was completed in 1973 and is characterized by its high windowless walls and bold colour palette. The architect was inspired by the Kasbah, a Spanish fortress-like structure. The Muralla Roja consists of interconnected walls which hold 50 apartments; studios and homes. Residents have the luxury of experiencing surreal views of the ocean and the surrounding greenery.

Ricardo Bofill’s architectural work often challenges the traditional aesthetic of suburban buildings; shape and space co-exist in ways that one would think are impossible.  Although each of Bofill’s projects is unique, similarities can be seen when comparing one of his most recent projects, the Mohammed VI Polytechnic to La Muralla Roja. The university also boasts a striking colour palette and square-shaped walls.
